But restoration and custom paint shops will often lay down at least four to five layers. And, if urethane clearcoat is applied over that heavy basecoat, It gets trapped under the urethane and lifts it, causing a bubble or lifted area.Ĭollision repair shops typically apply two to three coats of basecoat clear.
